Lauren is a singer-songwriter from North Carolina who was in town doing a music project with some mutual friends. She came over to my old apartment studio and we walked around Harlem and did some portraits in Trinity Cemetery as well. She was a delight to work with and we all had a blast that chilly day!
I met Paddy Boom at an art gallery opening about the teenage years of Basquiat in one of my favourite meetings of all time. I had no idea who he was and was playing a guessing game of who was probably famous in the room, and he mischievously told me later he’d been the drummer for Scissor Sisters. I was mortified but he thought it was hilarious. He invited me to shoot his band Faith at their rehearsal studio a few weeks later and we ended up becoming friends. Paddy is a great guy, and a very enthusiastic and supportive person. I ended up photographing him and his various music outfits a lot since. I shot these photos on the roof of his apartment building in Chelsea to promote one of his shows.
My friend Chelsea had just decided to leave her longtime home in the East Village and move back to the other side of the country. We did this shoot with the vintage suitcase to commemorate that.
In autumn 2017 I had the pleasure of working with bestselling thriller author Cate Holahan on a book trailer for her novel Lies She Told. We shot the book jacket portrait at her home and had a lively chat about music and the art life. Not only is Cate a respected author, she’s also a talented musician who composed and performed the eerie music for the book trailer herself! She was imaginative and fun and had a terrific sense of humour. I really enjoyed working with her.
